Johanna was born to John Byrne and Mary (nee Wall). Johanna was one of 8 siblings and 1 of 4 girls. The four Byrne sisters, Maggie, Johanna Jane, Catherine (Cattie) and Mary Ann arrived in Palmerston on 21 February 1890, together with their future sister-in-law, Elizabeth Spry. In 1895 when Johanna was 32, she was one of the 82 women who enrolled to vote after the franchise was granted to South Australian and Territory women in 1894. Johanna registered at the Palmerston polling place. Her occupation was listed as "spinster". Johanna and her sisters sheltered with an infant at home during the night of the 1897 cyclone. Their home was demolished and they were left sheltering under a table. Johanna was taken off the roll again in the 1897 review, having left the district. Johanna and her sister, Maggie, were living in Sydney in 1927 when they organised the funeral of their sister, Mary Ann Mayhew. Johanna also died in Sydney. The two unmarried sisters are registered on the Census from 1931 until 1940 at Tipperary Station where they undertook domestic duties for their brother and family; Johanna is on the Electoral Roll for Batchelor from 1934 until 1937.,
