Significant events were pinnacles in shaping the Northern Territory's history, such as the construction of the overland telegraph line, which brought pastoralists, explorers, and those seeking new frontiers. Annother massive event in the NT's short history was Cyclone Tracy on Christmas Eve, 24 December 1974.
The Northern Territory Library's Cyclone Tracy collection features a fascinating evacuees list, which was one of the biggest logistical exercises ever undertaken in Darwin. The names of nearly 33,000 people are recorded in the 'List of Darwin Evacuees', one of very few copies ever produced.
The many other records and dedications pay tribute to the victims and survivors of this of this tragedy, by ensuring this collection preserves an unforgettable episode in the Territory’s history.
Many historic Territory images, including these selected, are contained in the 'PictureNT' collection which is housed in the 'Territory Stories' repository.
