Biographical notes: Emily Kame Kngwarreye was born c1910 in Alhalkere, the Utopia area of Central Australia. She was a traditional Aboriginal woman who lived in the relative isolation of the desert. Kngwarreye began her career as an artist in the late 1970s, working with the medium of batik on silk and was a founding member of the Utopia Women's Batik Group. However, it is in 1988 that she discovered painting and it was as a painter that she created her greatest work. Kngwarreye has been compared to the world’s greatest contemporary and expressionist painters though she is unique in a number of ways. For instance, her career as a painter began when she was elderly, in her late 70s. In the short and intensely creative period, from 1988 to her death in 1996, Kngwarreye was incredibly prolific. She created more than three thousand painting over the eight year period. Her work is infused with the underlying theme of ‘country’ and all the connotations that meant to a traditional Aboriginal woman. As Kngwarreye’s work developed, she moved away from the norms of Central Australian Aboriginal art such as the regulated, precise dot work and the use of iconographies. Instead she developed her own style, that unknown to her, was echoed in the works of Pollack and De Kooning. The vibrancy and uninhibited vision of her work could communicate across all cultures.
