Biographical notes: In 1884, at the age of 16, Florence married Sydney Budgen, a 25 year old saddler who had lived in the Northern Territory since 1880. By 1889 Florence owned property in Pine Creek and was living at Burrundie, until the family moved to Darwin in 1890 to renovate and operate the Terminus Hotel. The Banyan tree on Cavenagh Street was planted by the Budgens of Terminus Hotel in the 1890s. This Banyan tree continues to stand today on the grounds of the Darwin Civic Centre. In addition to running a hotel, Florence was active in horse racing, attended fancy dress balls and worked to raise money for charities. In 1905 Florence’s husband died, leaving her to rear their five children. By 1906, as well as running the Terminus, Florence had a mining lease and in 1912 became involved in the motion picture industry. With the outbreak of the First World War Florence became a founding member of the Northern Territory branch of the Red Cross.
