Biographical notes: Jean arrived in the Northern Territory on the 29 April 1928 with her parents as a one month old baby. In 1949 she married William (Bill) Thomas Allen and together they had one daughter and four sons. They lived at Tennant Creek then moved to the Sandover Depot, about forty kilometres from Utopia. Bill at various times worked away from home, Jean was left with her children living in isolation with four goats and only a wheelbarrow for transport. In 1953 the family moved to Elliott and her two eldest boys reached school age so Jean contacted the education department because the school had closed. She was told to find another seven pupils and it would be viable to re-open the school, Jean discussed the matter with Aboriginal parents, resulting in the school re-opening again to serve the Elliott community and is still operating. In 1963 the Allen family returned to Tennant Creek. Jean worked as the school secretary from 1972 1986. Jean held a number of voluntary positions served as: secretary /treasurer for the Kindergarten a member of the Country Women’s Association (CWA); as member of the Christmas tree committee and help with Christmas tree for the town’s children at the Goldfields Hotel; ten years as the Brown Owl for the Brownies and Guides Association; secretary and treasurer for the Junior Baseball League and secretary of the Northern Territory Arts Council’s Tennant Creek branch. Jean like many women living in isolated communities kept their communities together.
