Biographical notes: Whiteford's father, William, was in charge of the locomotive workshop at the two and a half mile near Darwin. The family were very much a part of Darwin society and were given a sendoff when they left town in July 1913. George Whiteford's brother David also served in the first world war. They had another brother William and a sister 'Lill'. After the war, Whiteford married Freda Baldwin on 28 February 1920.

Service History: Unit embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A11 'Ascanius' in May 1916. He was wounded and gassed on 27 May 1918. Whiteford recieved several promotions and was awarded the Military Medal on 7 July 1918 for "bravery in the field". He returned to Australia on 10 May 1919.
