Biographical notes: Listed on 1909 electoral roll as a farmer at Apollo Bay, Victoria. Sailed to Sydney on SS 'Montoro' on June 14 1914. Arrived back in Darwin on 23 July 1914 on the SS 'Empire' from Melbourne. Donated 5 pounds to the Red Cross Fund on 24 September 1914 – his address was listed as Batchelor. Arrived into Darwin on SS 'Taiyuan' on 27 July 1915, again from Melbourne. Donated 10 shillings to the Pine Creek Red Cross Fund on 12 August 1915. Listed again on the electoral roll 1930 - 1943 electoral roll as a farmer at Yarrandale, New South Wales; and then he was registered at Huskisson, New South Wales with no occupation [retired] from 1949 – 1954.

Service History: Syme's unit embarked from Melbourne per HMAT A32 'Themistocles' on 28 January 1916. Transferred to 60th Battalion 3 April 1916 and sent to France. Wounded 19 July 1916 and sent to England 23 July 1916. Returned to Australia per HS 'Kanowna' 9 September 1916 and medically discharged 23 January 1917.
