In May 1933, Frieda went back to Alice Springs to work for Miss Golder's guesthouse as a waitress, offsider and general hand for nearly seven months. Frieda returned to South Australia, but returned to work for Hazel Golder in 1937. Frieda took a position working as housekeeper for the Haese family at Tea Tree Well for three months until Ti-Tree station offered her a domestic job. Within twelve months the station owner, William Joseph Heffernan proposed marriage. The couple were married in the dining room at the Australian Inland Mission on the 12th September 1939. Frieda ran a ration store at the home and sold groceries, hardware, clothing and essential patent medicines. The couple purchased the 1400 square mile Woolla Down station where they ran between 5000 and 6000 head of stock.
The Heffernans celebrated their silver wedding anniversary in September 1964. They were highly respected in the Northern Territory. Frieda died in 1976 and her ashes are buried with her husband at Ti-Tree Station.
