Biographical notes: James was born in Gladesville, Sydney, to James and Kate McDonald. He was orphaned at the age of 11. James was a frequent correspondent to the Northern Territory Times and Gazette during the war. He served in Gallipoli and France. After the war he was involved in the construction of the Katherine railway bridge. He was President of the Returned Services League (RSL) for one year. James became a lighthouse keeper at Cape Don for six months and was caretaker of the RSL in Darwin from 1946.

Service History: Embarked from Darwin on 'Taiyuan' on 4th March 1915 to enlist, with Neil Boyle; J.T. Johnson; Lucian Porter Wetherby; R.W. Stirling; Percy Clifton Reaby; Charles Birfield Dickason; G. Classen; Jeremiah Buckley and J. Beattie. The unit embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on board HMAT A63 'Karoola' on 12 June 1915. Returned to Australia 21 March 1919 on 'Kildonian Castle'. He also served in WW2 as D301 in Darwin in the AASC.
