Title: Visiting Fogg Dam
Name: Whalan, Geoff
My Story: A few shots from Fogg Dam - not much bird activity in middle of day - looks like sunrise and late afternoon are best. All the non-feathered animals such as goannas and wallabies were laid up in the shade I assume. Temperature was around 34 degrees at mid-day but not much humidity. crocodiles - no freshies - but there is one large (4.5 metres) resident male salty that the rangers have been trying to catch for years. There is a trap that he avoids in spite of tidbits like dead chooks. The NT News has the occasional photo of the croc crossing the dam wall. By the way, Fogg Dam is the remnants of a failed rice farm from the 1960's which was financed by a syndicate of American entertainers who lost all their investment. It failed mainly because the magpie geese got fat on rice. There are still a few remnant patches of rice. The rainbow bee-eater crop was more difficult because of the backlighting - the crop has resulted in some halo-ing around the bird which I have been unable to eliminate. To avoid the backlighting I would have had to walk 20 metres into the swamp to get the sun at the right angle - I was more comfortable working on dry land.
