Abstract

Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) involves storing water underground for later beneficial use. This report has used the Australian Guidelines for Water Recycling: Managed Aquifer Recharge framework to undertake a risk assessment of the proposed upper King River MAR scheme for the purposes of ensuring that human health and the environment are protected. The upper King River MAR scheme is located approximately 50 km south of the centre of Katherine, NT in the Daly River catchment. The proposed MAR scheme will harvest surface water from the King River to recharge the Tindall limestone aquifer. Several configurations of the scheme have been identified in this Stage 1 desktop review and several investigations and subsequent field studies have been recommended to ensure risks to human health and the environment are managed appropriately. Studies recommended for the Stage 2 assessment include: • Water quality, hazards and hazardous events evaluation • Clogging risk and treatment evaluation • Drinking water risk assessment • Geochemical evaluation • Tracer evaluation and borehole drilling to establish aquifer-river connectivity • Operational requirements for the MAR scheme including clogging management • Planning and related requirements including drilling permits The results of these field and laboratory investigations studies will be reported in the sequel upper King River MAR scheme Stage 2 risk assessment.,
