Biographical notes
Gerald Edward Aplin was born in Townsville, Queensland, one of nine children born to William and Mary Jane Aplin. Aplin became a grazier and took up Wollogorang Station, straddling the Northern Territory-Queensland border, as a part-owner manager. On 7th July 1915 he married Margaret Constance (Madge) Knight-Eaton. Aplin was with the 25th Battalion and was killed in action on 29 July 1916 in France. Margaret was in Brisbane, preparing to travel to England when she was informed of his death.,
History
Aplin embarked from Brisbane on HMAT A26 'Armadale' on the 18 September 1915. Doneley’s book, “Black Over Blue”: p.52-53, describes the battle at Pozieres where Aplin was killed under heavy machine-gun fire. The Red Cross Wounded and Missing file also contains eye witness accounts of his death and the way an unofficial armistice was declared to allow the stretcher bearers to reach their fallen men and how the German doctors also assisted.,
