Biographical notes

Born to Thomas and Amy Mackay. At the age of 14 he took head prize at his school in Ecclestown Road, Thornton Heath, Surrey. Beck worked as a steward on coasting vessels Wyreema, Wandilla, Kapunda, Coolgardie and others.,

History

Beck's unit embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A16 'Star of Victoria' on 31 March 1916 and transferred to 49th Battalion on 20 May 1916. Taken on strength 13 August 1916 and mortally wounded on 3 September 1916 at Mouquet Farm, Pozieres. The Unit War diary has a two page account of the assault on the trenches at "Ferme de Mouquet" in which Thomas died.,
