O'Keeffe joined the Contingent leaving Darwin on 13 April 1916 on board the ss 'Montoro'. His unit embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A38 'Ulysses' on 25 October 1916. He returned to Australia on 31 January 1918 and was discharged medically unfit.,
