In 1987 Janet filled the full-time elected position of Administrative and Clerical Officers' Association (ACOA'S) Northern Territory branch assistant secretary and in this capacity has continued to promote and be a spokesperson for women workers. She become active in the Territory trade union in the 1990s and has worked as an ACOA member, branch executive member, delegate, committee convenor and Northern Territory national women's caucus delegate. She was motivated to help change the ACOA and build the membership percentage up and because of this the union movement in the Territory has been in a position to make informed comment to debate and action women's employment issues.,
