Biographical notes

Myrtle moved to Darwin with her sisters, Lillian, Gert, and Eileen in 1910 after the death of their mother. During the First World War she was a member of the Darwin Red Cross, Myrtle helped raise funds and staged concerts. She was one of the original members of the Country Women's Association in Darwin and a member of the Victoria League. In August 1925 she married James Edward Fawcett at the Darwin Methodist Church. They have four children Jim, Bob, Tom and Pam. On New Year's Day 1951, the Fawcett's moved into the new Adelaide River Hotel and built a Sidney Williams hut on their premises, Myrtle became the genial and friendly hostess for 28 years. Her husband James Edward Fawcett died and was buried in Adelaide in 1960, she continued to run the business with her son Jim until they sold the hotel in 1973 and moved to Darwin. Myrtle was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire MBE in1970 for the services she provided to the Adelaide River community. She survived Cyclone Tracy in December 1974 and died at the age of 70 in September 1975. She will always be remembered for her warmth and exuberance at ‘Myrtle's pub'.,
