Biographical notes

Quelch was on the electoral roll in 1919 at his sister's house at Stamford Road Enoggera (Qld.). He appears on the electoral roll for Batchelor from 1934 to 1949, changing from Cavanagh St to Channel Island. He worked as an engine driver and water side worker and was a union member of the NAWU. He contracted leprosy in 1935 and was taken to the Channnel Island Leprosarium. He elected to stay on the island during World War II and died 3/10/1951 and was buried there near the old wharf.,

History

Quelch served for 3 years in the South African Constabulary during the Boer War. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa medal with 4 clasps. He embarked from Brisbane on HMAT A42 'Boorara' on 16 August 1916. He was wounded in action in August 1918 receiving a shrapnel wound to his left leg, buttock and face and returned to Australia by HT 'Main' October 1919.,
