Description

When first entering the grounds of Batchelor Institute you are greeted by what seems to be a forest of Tiwi Pukamani poles. The Pukumani ceremony is the Tiwi people's burial ceremony and includes singing, dancing and the making of specially carved poles called Tutini as well as Tugas and arm bands. These large poles are made from the trunk of the Ironwood trees and are carved and decorated to celebrate the dead person's life and spiritual journey.,
