NT Department of Land Resource Management NT Remote Communities Storm Tide Study and Inundation Mapping J1507-PR001B 10 Systems Engineering Australia Pty Ltd July 2016 Pirlangimpi (11.40S 130.42E) This small community comprises some 400 persons2 and 80 residences, serviced by an airstrip and a small jetty with barge and ferry services to Darwin. Previously known as Garden Point, it is located on the northwest coast of Melville Island (the eastern-most Tiwi Island) about 10 km south of the entrance to Port Cockburn (refer Figure 2-3) and the Timor Sea. It is separated from Bathurst Island only by a narrow (2 km wide) channel, which becomes Apsley Strait to the south, with connectivity through to Beagle Gulf that is immediately to the north of Darwin. The community is at an elevation of between 5 and 10 m AHD but some land adjacent to the coast may be as low as 3 m AHD. The estimated tidal range is 4.6 m, with present HAT at 1.9 m AHD. The regional bathymetry (refer Section 3.4) appears relatively shallow along the coast, although Port Cockburn itself is quite deep. Milikapiti (11.42S 130.67E) This indigenous community has a population of about 4503 and is situated on the northern coast of Melville Island (refer Figure 2-4). Formerly known as Snake Bay, it is serviced by an all-weather airstrip and barge and ferry services. Whilst the town lies mostly above 10 m AHD, some coastal properties are as low as 5 m. The estimated tidal range is 3.1 m, with present HAT at 1.4 m AHD. The regional bathymetry is relatively shallow along the coast and there may be sufficient wave penetration into Snake Bay to create breaking wave setup impacts along the shoreline. The large scale adjacent coastal features of Shark Bay and Snake Bay could act to focus storm surge in the region. 2.3 West Arnhem Coast Minjilang (11.15S 132.58E) This small indigenous community of some 3004 residents is the only settlement on Croker Island, which is separated from the nearby mainland Cobourg Peninsula to the west by the Bowen Strait. The town is on the shore of Mission Bay on the eastern side of the island and is open to the Arafura Sea (refer Figure 2-5). It is serviced by an airstrip and barge services. 2 http://www.nt.gov.au/health/remoterecruitment/communities/Community%20profile%20 %20PIRLANGIMPI.pdf 3 http://www.schools.nt.edu.au/tegs/milik/mili.htm 4 http://westarnhem.nt.gov.au/minjilang/ http://www.nt.gov.au/health/remoterecruitment/communities/Community%20profile%20%20PIRLANGIMPI.pdf http://www.nt.gov.au/health/remoterecruitment/communities/Community%20profile%20%20PIRLANGIMPI.pdf http://www.schools.nt.edu.au/tegs/milik/mili.htm http://westarnhem.nt.gov.au/minjilang/
