Description
The Berkley/Starford USA team unloading a support vehicle from a bus, Northern Territory University, Casuarina, NT, 19 October 1996. Forrest North was team leader of the project. It was a joint project between Berkeley and Stanford to race in the 1996 World Solar Challenge. The team bought a broken down school bus for $900 and fixed it up. To save money the team cut a hole in the bus and loaded two solar car shells, 1 Saab, 1 Yahama Virago 750 motorcycle, 1 propane frigerator, 7,000 lbs of tools and food (most of which was confiscated by customs) several windsurf boards and surfboards and 1 pack of Silver Zinc batteries. The above image features one of the more difficult unloads. Usually the team would find a loading dock with a overhang and get the bus door (which was hung on piano hinge and held with ratchet straps during driving) under the lip so they could have a shorter dismount. In this case there isn't if any overhang and so they used long stout boards. On the return they found an amazing forklift operator who forked the car in with one smooth movement. His forks weren't long enough so he had to toss in the car to bridge the last 6-12" but he did that so expertly they didn't even have time to stop him.,
