History

The Department of Civil Aviation was created formally on 24 November 1938 although civil aviation had been part of the Australian landscape since the late 1800's. Qantas was a well known service within civil aviation through the Royal Flying Doctor Service and also the Empire Flying Boats which continued to operate until early 1942 with the Darwin to Singapore mail and passenger run.,
