The DH89 Dragon Six of Hewitt, Kay and Stewart being refuelled The aircraft ZK-ACO was the second of the New Zealand entries and was named Tainui. It was sponsored in the Centenary Air Race by the New Zealand Centenary Air Race Committee and allocated Race No60. J. D. Hewitt and D. D. Kay were the pilots, whilst F. Stewart was the photographer. The aircraft departed Milenhall at 0640GMT on 20 October 1934, landing in Darwin at 0835hr on 27 October, following an uneventful trip. They struck engine trouble at Cloncurry however, when the aircraft hit a fence whilst taxying at night. Repairs took a further six days and they arrived in Melbourne at 0133 hrs on 3 November and were placed fifth in speed and sixth in the handicap section.,
