Notes

This is a true story told by Wandjuk, a Rirratji?u clan leader from Yirrkala. During the war, he and some other Yol?u went for a hunting trip to a small island not far from the mainland at Yirrkala. That island is called Dhambaliya. While they were there, they heard an unfamiliar sound in the sky. An American pilot had crashed his plane in the sea, and had ejected and parachuted to the ground. They saw him swimming and then go into the bush. They went to him and helped him back to Yirrkala. The story is mainly about this trip back to Yirrkala., About the rescuing of an American pilot, Fl Lt Clarence Sandford from the sea near Dhambaliya Island, Flight of Lt. Clarence Sanford. This information was obtained from the following publication: Mission to Arnhem Land (McKennie) Half Century in Arnhem Land (Ella Sheperdson),
