Surveying is the measurement of land to locate, describe and map the boundaries and corners of a parcel of land. It may also include mapping of the topography of the land.
South Australian Government survey teams did early survey activities in the Northern Territory. These include Escape Cliffs in 1864 (led by Finniss); and Port Darwin and hinterland in 1869 (led by Goyder). Later surveys include the overland telegraph line and the railway line.
In the NT the Surveyor-General has legal responsibility for survey records. Only government staff undertook surveying activities in the past. Now commercial surveyors do most survey work. The Surveyor-General approves all survey plans produced from land surveys.
Records about surveys, early land sales, land administration and tenure are at Library & Archives NT (LANT), State Records of South Australia and National Archives of Australia.,
