Description / Abstract: Four 20 x 5 m sub catchments were sown to Eurochloa mosambicensis and instrumented to measure rainfall, runoff and sediment losses at the Douglas Daly Research Farm in the Northern Territory of Australia. A 1 x 1 m quadrate was used to measure vegetation cover in plan view. Attachment cover (AC) was, therefore, used as an index of total vegetation cover in this study. Very close relationships exist between attached cover and sediment (bedload and suspended sediment) losses. As attached cover reduced to between 20 and 40%, sediment losses started to increase at an accelerated rate. Above 40% attached cover, bedload and suspended sediment losses were considerably reduced. Attached cover also showed close relationships with surface runoff. Above 50% attached cover, runoff losses were generally negligible whilst reduction in AC to below 50% strongly influenced runoff. To better explain these relationships, however, rainfall characteristics (intensity, duration), antecedent soil moisture and litter cover need to be taken into account.
