dc.description.biographicalHe had four brothers serving on active service in British Regiments and arrived in Australia aged 35 (about 1908). Lewis joined the Northern Territory Public Service in 1912 and occupied the position of Captain of the Cable Guard, Sheriff to the Hospital and various other tasks which from time to time became his responsibility as one of the most senior men in the Darwin Public Service Sector. He is said to have exercised great influence in securing recruits for the Army. He was aged 42 years at the time of his death. He never saw his daughter who was born after he left for the war. “His wife Gertrude Lewis was formerly a matron of Thursday Island Hospital and Darwin Hospital. After Captain Lewis died in France she stayed in Darwin with her infant daughter taking a position as manageress of the Victoria Hotel. She left Darwin in 1919. Source: Geddes: p.50.en
dc.description.historyAwarded Queen's South Africa Medal with Clasps for Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Orange Free States, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1903. Lewis served 20 years in 13th Hussars (in which regiment he served in the Boer War, where he received both the Queen's and King's Medals with 6 clasps. He was also mentioned in dispatches by General Baden-Powell). Also served for 4.6 years as Officer Commanding, Cable Guard, Darwin. He recruited and led the first Contingent from Darwin, April 1915. He embarked from Brisbane on board HMAT A60 'Aeneas' 29 June 1915. Captain R. J. Lewis, one of the company commanders of the 25th Battalion, was shot through the head on the morning on which the battalion entered the line - 18 June 1916. Source: C.E.W.
