|Biographical notes:||Kathryn Flynn trained as a nurse at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and then moved to St Margaret’s Hospital in Sydney to train as a midwife. Later she completed Bachelor of Nursing and further postgraduate studies at the Northern Territory University. An interest in parachuting led to her training as a pilot. In 1962, Kathryn was the first and only woman to compete in the National Australian Parachute Championships at Cessnock, NSW and in 1963 travelled to the 6th World Parachute Jumping Championships in Orange, Massachusetts, USA. Kathryn and her sister Christine were the first women to graduate from Cessnock Training College as commercial pilots in 1968 and featured in an exhibition of 50 famous women pilots which showed at the Power House Museum 2000 in Sydney. Kathryn obtained employment as a private pilot to a Victorian businessman whose interests took them all over Australia. During one of these trips to the Northern Territory in 1972, she met John Flynn at Nhulunbuy, where they married in 1973. Kathryn died on 30th September 2007 and her ashes were scattered from an aircraft over the Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory. Kathryn’s other interest and activities involved the following organizations - President of NT Branch of the Australian Women’s Pilot Association; President of the Women’s Advisory Council; President of the Northern Territory Women’s Nursing Mothers Association; President of the Women’s Electoral Lobby; President of the Catholic Women’s League; President of the Zonta Club; Australian President of The 99s, an International Women Pilots Association; Research assistant at the Menzies School of Health Research; Worked for the Arthritis Association of the Northern Territory; Volunteer and took hydrotherapy classes for arthritis sufferers.
