Biographical notes: In 1871, Mary and her family moved to the Northern Territory where her father took up the post of Inspector of Police. Mary and her sister Rose spent much of their youth in the Territory and had become well known through community and church events. Mary married William Wallace Andrew who came to Darwin as a civil engineer for the Palmerston to Pine Creek railway. In 1895, at the age of 31, she became one of the 82 Territory women who enrolled to vote after the franchise was granted to South Australian and Territory women in 1894. In 1909, the Andrews family left the Northern Territory when William was transferred back to South Australia.
