|Biographical notes:||In 1966 Joan married Gavin Carpenter, they have two sons. They bought into a partnership which operated the Timber Creek and Dunmarra roadhouses initially living in a caravan without running water and power until the modern roadhouse at Dunmarra was completed. In 1973 the family moved to Tennant Creek where the company purchased the Tennant Creek Newsagency and the boys started school where Joan worked serving on the Area School and Karguru School Councils. Joan was employed as a school community liaison officer with the Northern Territory Department of Education for more than ten years. This gave Joan the opportunity to travel throughout the Barkly region to work with Aboriginal people for whom she had a high regard. Joan was also a member of the Barkly branch of the Isolated Children’s and Parent’s Association in which she represented at the inaugural Australian Broadcasting Commission Advisory Council’s Northern Territory branch and in 1979. She was a ministerial appointee of the inaugural Education Advisory Council. Joan Helped Aboriginal people and has been responsible for several garden projects in Tennant Creek.|
