James Mollison and a group of well wishers at Darwin Civil Aerodrome on the night of 6 June 1931. A few minutes later at 0020 hours on 7 June, Mollison departed for England in DH60G aircraft VH-UFT. Soon after commencing the take off run Mollison crashed, seriously damaging the aircraft a DH60G rebuilt as a single seat aircraft with a Gypsy engine specially fitted for the record attempt Australia-England.
