Description

American and Australian personnel inspecting the wreckage of a PGOE-1 Kittyhawk fighter aircraft. The aircraft is presumed to be that of Lt John D Livingstone, a pilot with the 9th Squadron, 49th Pursuit Group operating from the 34 mile airstrip in 1942. USAAF Livingstone was involved in aerial combat on 4 April 1942, when the 9th Squadron intercepted a force of G4M1 'Betty' bombers and AGM2 'Zeros' over Darwin. Livingstone and another pilot flew over the RAAF Station without identifying themselves and were fired on by the defences. Livingstone was wounded but managed to fly to the airstrip at 34 mile, where he crashed on landing and was killed in the ensuing fire. He was buried at the Gardens Cemetery in Darwin and later disinterred and re-buried at Adelaide River. See also PH0238/0789.,
