Biographical notes
Douglas was a railway ganger with South Australian Government Railways. His address at embarkation was the Terminus Hotel, Port Darwin. He was declared bankrupt in 1915 and was a widower with two sons when he enlisted.,
History
Douglas was a member of the First Contingent to leave Darwin in April 1915. He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A40 'Ceramic' 24 November 1915 and disembarked at Marseilles, France on 27 March 1916. On the night of the 28/29 July, Douglas was sent to the line near Pozieres Cemetery with a party of about 10 Sappers who were to follow up the attack by the 23rd Battalion for the purpose of constructing a machine gun emplacement in the new front line. He was reported Missing in Action. Evidence given at the Court of Enquiry on 28 August 1917 is included in his service record. The Court determined that there was no evidence to suggest he was still alive and he was listed as Killed in Action.,
