History
McKenzie embarked Brisbane on board HMAT A55 'Kyarra' on 17 November 1916 as a part of the 15th Battalion, 22nd Reinforcement.
On 17 May 1917 he transferred to the 11th Battalion and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 3 August 1918.
On 12 February 1919, Sgt F.M. Steel of the 11th Battalion described his death: "He was hit on 10th Aug: about 8am just as we hopped off for the attack on Crepy Wood. I saw him lying dead as we passed him, had been hit by several M.G. bullets in body. We were only a few yards behind him when he was hit. Did not see him buried, but he was amongst the big number buried close by."
On 28 June 1919 Steel also stated: "we were attacked near Lahon Ridge on 10/8/18 when McKenzie was killed instantly, being hit in several places by a stream of machine gun bullets. He was buried at the Military Cemetery at Lahon Ridge and a cross erected to his memory.",
