Biographical notes
Buttercase was the eldest son of Andrew Buttercase of Uthrogle, Cupar, Fife. He served a five year apprenticeship with Douglas and Grant Kirkcally. When Buttercase retired from the regulars he was a sergeant in the Scotch Greys, with whom he had served in many of Britain's campaigns over a period of 15 years. Thus he had seen service in Egypt, South Africa, India and elsewhere. He was employed at the Fannie Bay Gaol before the war, took an interest in union matters and was the first secretary of the Darwin branch of the Australian Workers Union.,
History
Buttercase spent eight years in the RSG, four years in reserve; 2nd Light Horse Regiment, 11th Reinforcement; 10th Field Artillery Brigade; 11th Field Artillery Brigade; and 41st Battery. Butters embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A47 'Mashobra' 4 October 1915. He was killed in action 5 April 1918.,
