Hanson was the eldest son of Richard Davies Hanson, Chief Justice of South Australia and was a member of the Northern Territory Police Force for about four years at Anthony's Lagoon, Borroloola and Darwin. He was in charge of the Newcastle Waters Police Station when he volunteered for the front.,

Hanson embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A38 'Ulysses' on 25 October 1916. Hanson died of wounds at the 11th Casualty Clearing Station, Belgium.,
