Biographical notes
Nan was educated at Brisbane Girls' Grammar School and the University of Queensland. She worked as a teacher, then married Harry Giese in 1946, travelling with him to Darwin in 1954 when he was appointed Director of Welfare in the Northern Territory Administration. As an educator, Nan led organisations pioneering tertiary education in the Territory, including the Darwin Community College, the first in Australia, which became the Institute of Technology and then the Northern Territory University (now Charles Darwin University). From the late 1960s she played a major part in building up arts organisations, and served on the Arts Council of the Northern Territory, the North Australian Eisteddfod Council, the National Council of Women, the Darwin Performing Arts Centre, and the Museums and Art Galleries Board of the NT. Nationally, she served on the Music Board of the Australia Council - she was its Vice-President from 1975-80 and the Australia Council. Nan also served on the Darwin Hospital Board.
When in 2004 she was made Doctor of Education honoris causa, the citation noted that she had given ‘outstanding service to the Northern Territory community, particularly in education and the arts'. Her contributions have been recognised by a number of awards and honours.,
