Maggie Hickey was the first woman to lead a Parliamentary party in the Northern Territory. She was elected as an Australian Labour Party Member in 1996 and served for three terms as the Member for Barkly in the Northern Territory Assembly from 1990 until 2001. Maggie resigned from the leadership of the party in February 1999 because of her husband's illness. Source: Australian Women's Register : Margaret Hickey.
