His father J. A. Wallace took up a Mineral Lease near Wandi and was mining copper from 1901. Daniel and his sister Ella attended Brock's Creek School around 1906.,

History

Embarked Sydney on board SS 'Port Darwin' on 30 April 1918. When he disembarked in Suez he had influenza which developed into pleurisy and bronchitis by August. He joined his unit in September, but was struck down with malaria in October 1918. Returned to Australia 13 March 1919 on HT 'Wimaroa'.,
