Description

Lucy Parry is from the Malak Malak Clan of Daly River Region. She is the only person in the Wudikapildiyerr community who still uses traditional methods of cooking. At least four or five days a week, Lucy will be seen out the front of her house cooking wallaby, barramundi or any other foods from the surrounding environment which her partner, Joe, self-elected leader of the Wudikapildiyerr community and the head of the rangers, brings home to feed the family. On several occasions I was invited to sit and eat with the Parry family and I was surprised at how tasty wallaby stew and rice could be. As well as cooking, Lucy also burns wood to create piles of ash, which is taken into the local Daly River community and sold to other Indigenous people to mix with their chewing tobacco.,
