Biographical notes

Porter worked as a foreman rigger for Vestey Bros at the time of his enlistment with his colleagues William Conaghan and Frank McTaggart. They left for the trenches on 6 April 1916 per SS 'Montoro' from Darwin. He married Elizabeth Musselwhite from West Harnham at the Church of England in Compton, Chamberlayne, Wiltshire, while in Hurdcott camp on 15 December 1917. His wife and two children had their passage paid to follow him out to Australia in 1920.,

History

Porter enlisted 1 May 1916 as a private. His Unit embarked from Adelaide, on board HMAT A70 'Ballarat' on 12 August 1916 and proceeded to France 5 December 1916. Porter was promoted to Lance Corporal 20 January 1917. He was admitted to Exeter Auxiliary Hospital with severe pneumonia on 19 April 1917 but returned to France on 6 September 1918 to reinforce 30th Battalion. He retained his commission and was back in Exeter Auxiliary Hospital with rheumatism on 20 December 1918. He undertook lengthy England based training and assignments, then returned to Australia 7 September 1919 per 'Euripides' and was discharged on 4 December 1919.,
