Biographical notes

"Bill" Harney arrived in the Northern Territory in September 1919. He worked as a cattleman, a fisherman and then on roadworks for the government until 1940 when he was appointed Protector of Aborigines with the Native Affairs Branch. In 1948 he left Native Affairs Branch to focus on writing his book. Some years later, he was appointed the first Ranger for Ayers Rock and Mount Olga National Park. Source: NTDB, 2008: p.260-261.,

History

Harney embarked from Brisbane on board HMAT A50 'Itonus' on 30 December 1915. He was transferred to 9th Battalion in March 1916 and wounded in the leg on 6 January 1917. He returned to Australia on 12 April 1919 on HT 'Suffolk'.,
