Biographical notes
Whittle joined the Royal Australian Garrison Artillery as a Lieutenant in 1912. After undertaking several military courses, he was posted to Freemantle, W.A. for a short time before joining the AIF in May 1915. After the war he moved through the ranks to become Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the Darwin Garrison from 13 April 1936 to 12 March 1939. He also served in the Second World War (Service no: VX85043).,
History
Whittle embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A67 'Orsova' on 17 July 1915. He was promoted to Captain on 1 November 1917. He was discharged from the AIF on 24 February 1919 and undertook an ordnance course at Ordnance College Woolwich, London.,
