Biographical notes

Charles Caleb Lloyd-Apjohn married Fredericka Charlottie Lemm in Brisbane on 23 August 1886. They had three children: George Lawrence Marshall, Llewellyn Crozier Desmond, and Charles born on 8 December 1894. Charles married in Middlesex, London on 22 July 1918 during the war and returned to France a week later. His wife Marjorie arrived in Fremantle on 2 July 1919, just a few weeks after Charles had returned to Australia. In Darwin Charles and Marjorie had their first baby Philippa Joan, who was born in September 1920. Unfortunately she died 15 months later of diphtheria on 6 December 1921 and is buried in the Darwin Gardens Cemetery Reserve. Charles was appointed Health Officer in Darwin on 28 September 1921. They later moved to the Wynnum Manly area of Brisbane, where Charles' brother Llewellyn also resided. Another daughter was born in Cleveland, Brisbane in 1924. His brother George was the first horticulturist in the Horseshoe Bay area near Magnetic Island. Charles was a keen sailor and made many trips on his boat Sabrina to the Barrier Reef and Magnetic Island. Compiled with assistance from Christine Page-Hanify, Charles' granddaughter.,

History

Charles left with Captain Lewis from Darwin per SS 'Changsha' for Melbourne on 26 April 1915. The Unit embarked Melbourne on board HMAT A70 'Ballarat' on 9 September 1915. He served with the 3rd Australian Field Artillery Brigade until transferred to the 3rd Australian Light Railway Operating Company, 19 January 1917. He was reported on the list of casualties due to gas on 8 December 1917. Charles returned to Australia 19 April 1919 and was discharged 6 August 1919.,
