Biographical notes

Reverend Albert Ernest Lapthorne was born at Sandhurst near Bendigo 28 June 1879 to parents Henry Julius and Jane Lapthorne (nee Thompson). Albert married Matilda Zipporah Crapp in Queensland on 12 April 1910. He was appointed to Darwin by the Methodist conference in March 1913 and arrived with his wife, Matilda, per SS 'Taiyuan' on 11 April 1913 from Queensland. He was a well liked Minister of the church. There is shipping record evidence of his wife leaving Darwin with a female child. Owing to his wife’s serious illness, the Reverend Lapthorne applied for a transfer south and farewelled Darwin in January 1915, when a large and representative congregation gathered at the Methodist Church on Sunday evening January 24 to hear his farewell address. A further farewell was held for him on Thursday evening, 28 January 1915. Reverend Lapthorne’s Service Record has information about an adopted child under the age of 16 years. Reverend Lapthorne returned to Queensland after the war where he married Alice Mary Wyeth Dean on 1 January 1925. His second wife is named as next of kin on his Second World War Service Record.,

History

The Northern Territory Times of 19 April 1917 advised that the Reverend had enlisted. His Service Record shows that he actually enlisted on 22 January 1917 as a Private with the Machine Gun Reinforcements, Service No. 19004. He was discharged 5 May 1917 and relieved of camp duties and reappointed as a Chaplain. The nominal roll lists the date as 9 May 1917 when he left as a Chaplain with his Unit from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A15 'Port Sydney'. Reverend Lapthorne served in Egypt attached to the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. He returned to Australia per HT 'Essex' 15 June 1919 and was discharged 28 August 1919. Albert enlisted again for the Second World War in Brisbane (Qld.), Service No. Q48386.,
