Biographical notes
Henty worked as a Telegraph operator at Tennant Creek prior to the war. He returned to the region after the war and became a stockman/pastoralist. Henty was killed by Willaberta Jack in 1928 and his daughter Claire was removed to Croker Island Mission - an institution for Aboriginal children of mixed descent. Claire Henty-Gebert wrote her life story in "Paint me black".,
History
Henty embarked from Australia on 23 June 1915 per HMAT A30 'Borda'. He served first at Gallipoli and then went to France via Alexandria. He was injured on many occasions and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
Henty was recommended for award on 15 May 1917 for his efforts in maintaining command of a bomb post which was under heavy fire at operations east of Bullecourt. Although injured Henty kept the position secure and assisted in driving the enemy back until he was relieved. He was awarded the Military Medal on 2 July 1917. Henty was also recommended for award for his actions during the attack on Polygon Wood on 25 September 1917 where he kept his platoon organised following the wounding of his Commander. His actions were recorded as being of 'an exceptionally high standard' and 'greatly inspired his men'.
Henty returned to Australia per ‘Llanstephan Castle’ on 10 February 1918.,
