Description

Each year the people of Gunbalanya (Oenpelli) in West Arnhem Land, hold the Stone Country Festival where the traditional owners welcome visitors to spend the day and night in their community sharing their culture, art and music. The festival program featured Injalak Hill tours where you are taken on a guided tour of some of the most amazing rock art sites in the Territory, painting, and weaving workshops with the local Indigenous women under the shady mango trees. There is bush foods, spear throwing competitions and of course the crowd favorite, traditional dancing. The Ramingining Dancers delighted the tourists with their good humor and skillful dancing. My highlights were watching Mark straightening spears over an open fire using his feet to finish the job, and meeting Ramingining Elder Bobby Bunnunggurr, who is a well know artist and musician, when not making art Bobby travels the world spreading the message about keeping traditional cultures strong.,
