1991 EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES GENDER EQUITY IN CURRICULUM The implementation of specific policy supporting girls in schools continued within the framework of the National Policy for the Education of Girls in Australian Schools and the 1986 Northern Territory Information Statement, Equal Opportunity in Education. Activities were directed towards meeting the four objectives of the national policy which are to raise awareness of the educational needs of girls to provide equal access to, and participation in, appropriate curriculum to foster a supportive school environment to encourage equitable resource allocation. Gender equity issues in curriculum continued to be a major focus for 1991, as new structures for monitoring curriculum inclusivity were implemented and old processes restructured. Gender equity curriculum committees for major subject areas were established, while the development of curriculum statements for school use focused on applying approved gender inclusive guidelines. Schools which chose to target girls' education within school improvement planning placed emphasis on the appropriateness of curriculum in the areas of language, content, context and methodology. Strategies for fostering supportive school environments through established networks were encouraged and goals identified by schools were supported by centrally-planned awareness activities. In addition, policy implementation was supported by networks of teachers, professional associations and wider community agencies. Particular initiatives implemented during the year were a comparison of the performances of females and males in English and Mathematics at Year 10 in the Northern Territory the hosting of a national conference of women's advisers under the auspices of the Australian Education Council participation in International Women's Day events 25
