MONDAY FEBRUARY 4 2019 SPORT 37 V1 - NTNE01Z01MA Liam Jurrah gets a handball out under pressure while playing for the Melbourne Demons in the AFL. He is one of many star players who fail to qualify for NTFL life membership why nots of a nine or even 10team NTFL can only be healthy because it creates a window into the future in terms of the games survival. Another club official was keen to discuss exactly what administrators have always rated their favourite item survival of the member clubs who have carried the NTFL for 100 years. Will one of several Weekend Warriors announce the AFLNTs own media as gurus and then come out with an exclusive on the Redtails joining the NTFL sooner rather than later? Rob Clarke and his Centralian organisation will be listening and watching intently for the news they desperately want to hear. Another area causing angst among several present day and past players is the terminology and logic required for NTFL life membership. The 200-game milestone has not been easy to achieve for players who have reached a higher level AFL, SANFL, WAFL or the VFL and has cast them as also-rans in a big field of talented footballers from Australias Top End. Im talking about the star players who reached the national and interstate stage Liam Jurrah, Austin Wonaeamirri, Matt Campbell, Marlon Motlop, Josh Cubillo, Aaron Davey, Alwyn Davey, Daniel Motlop, Richard Cole and Nathan Djerrkura. Those players plied their trade for something between zero and 100 games, became household names in the NT and footballers the league was, rightfully, proud to call their own. But NTFL life memberships continue to elude them while those players that wear a Thunder jumper in the fourthbest interstate competition in Australia have their NEAFL games added to their records. Is the league saying playing Thunder is above everything else when footballers are being handed league life membership before they reach it for their NTFL club? Well claim you as our own, but were not going to reward you despite what youve done by carrying our name and football tradition in the southern states. This writer has seen firsthand the adoration Territory footballers get from southern clubs, who cherish and respect the players from the north for both their unique skills and storylines. Reaching 200 NTFL games is beyond the capability of AFL retirees and former SANFL and WAFL greats because of tired bodies and a gentleman called Father Time. Add up some numbers and reward the ambassadors of our game with life membership and a permanent reminder of their contribution to the Territory game. I WONDER what the longterm repercussions will be for a Cairns representative side in an expanded NTFL competition. The modern breed of electronic media experts who work exclusively on weekends, YouTube and everyones favourite, social media, all burst into the Cairns song on Saturday night. That followed suggestions from AFLNT TV commentator and former St Marys coach Rick Nolan that the North Queenslanders could be part of the NTFL as soon as 2020. The breaking news that was discussed in this column five weeks ago emphasised AFL Cairns was well endowed with cash and was ready to go. GREY MORRIS MORRIS ON MONDAY Beating the drum on Cairns The problem, highlighted in this column, is the longevity of any new club and in Cairns case, signing a mandatory 10year entry deal that would cost them up to $10 million. That means costs of $800,000-plus for a decade, money that must be sourced from sponsors, members and, dare we say it, the Queensland Government. And as a big supporter of Rob Clarke and his multi-talented Alice Springs Redtails, the news of AFL Cairns grabbing a spot in the NTFL Premier League would not have been well received. But as one league official told me earlier this year, any discussion on the whys and 1924: Canada beats the United States 6-1 to retain the Olympic ice hockey gold medal at the Chamonix Games. Canadas LW Harry Watson is the Games top scorer with 46 points for goals and assists. 1924: Switzerland claims the inaugural Olympic bobsleigh gold medal at the Chamonix Games, ahead of Great Britain and Belgium. 1929: Archie Jackson scores 164 on debut for Australia against England at Adelaide. 1937: Don Bradman scores 212 (in 395 minutes) in the 4th cricket Test against England at the Adelaide Oval. 1947: Don Bradman is clean bowled by Alec Bedser for nought in the 4th Test against England at Adelaide, one of only seven ducks in his Test career that averaged 99.94. 1987: Dennis Connor skippers Stars and Stripes to a 4-0 sweep of a sevenrace series against Australias Kookaburra 3 and wins back the Americas Cup. 1989: Australian top-order bat Dean Jones scores 216 against the West Indies at the Adelaide Oval. 1990: Richard Hadlee takes his 400th wicket in Test cricket when he clean bowled Indias Sanjay Manjrekar on his home ground in Christchurch. 1991: Baseballs Hall of Fame board of directors vote 12-0 to ban Pete Rose due to his betting on games while a player and manager at the Cincinnati Reds. 1991: New Zealand batsman Martin Crowe and Andrew Jones make a world record 467-run stand against Sri Lanka at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. 1995: Zimbabwe beats Pakistan by an innings and 64 runs at Harare, top-order bat Grant Flower scoring an unbeaten 201 in his sides 4-544 declared. Bradman bowled for one of only seven ducksON THIS DAY NTFL acceptance a costly exercise as Redtails lie in wait
