NEWS WednesdayMarch 09, 2016 KATHERINETIMES 3katherinetimes.com.au Council votes on branch quarrel A PLAN to disendorse Willem Westra van Holthe by a faction within the Katherine branch of the Country Liberal Party appears dead in the water following a central council meeting in Alice Springs on March 5. The Katherine Times revealed last week that unreal backstabbing and infighting over the Member for Katherines political fall from grace had split the branch, with at least four members aiming to replace him as the partys pre-selected candidate. However, central council voted unanimously on Saturday to continue supporting Mr Westra van Holthe. CLP president Tory Mencshelyi said on Monday that the central council resolution demonstrated overwhelming support for the Member for Katherine. Central council moved a motion of support for the Member for Katherine, and it was an overwhelming result in favour of the Member for Katherine's continuing endorsement, she said. The branch will still hold a special general meeting on March 17, where it is understood the dissidents planned to call for Mr Westra van Holthes disendorsement. Following Saturdays resolution, it is unlikely such a call would now be tabled, but Ms Mencshelyi said the meeting would still go ahead. Katherine branch members will still have the opportunity to have a discussion, and I will be there to listen and take their concerns on board, she said. She would not comment on how the internal rift would be handled at the branch level. I'm not going to speculate on what may or may not occur at a special general meeting and how others, including the management committee, will deal with internal party matters, Ms Mencshelyi said. Mr Westra van Holthe said the resolution had clearly and in effect, re-endorsed me as the pre-selected candidate for the 2016 election. Clean Up Australia Day allowed groups and commu nity members to clean up a part of Katherine they felt needed some extra attention. House parent Lesley Pitt said the students tried to participate in Clean Up Australia Day every year. It can be hard getting 40 kids out of bed on a Sunday morning, she laughed. We come here very often on the weekends during the year, so its nice to see it clean. Katherine Town Council community support officer Rosemary Jennings said numbers were up in 2016, with 23 people registering online and 38 offering their support on the day. Our council staff collect ed well over 40 bags of rubbish from the various cleanup sites, she said. Regular participants of the event noted a significant decrease in rubbish on the ground.
