Gold Coasts six-game losing streak should have come to an end last week. Up by 39 points against St Kilda, the Suns were cruising. But St Kilda booted the last six goals of the match to snatch a two- point win, effectively saving the short-term future of coach Alan Richardson in the process. Hawthorn crushed Adelaide by 56 points last round, and will aim for another percentage-boosting win. key: Scoring. Gold Coast have struggled to kick big scores this year. The Blues managed just seven behinds in the first half, and went on to lose by 57 points in front of their home fans. With just one win for the year, Carlton are in crisis mode. The Bombers booted the first eight goals of the Thursday night Optus Stadium match on the way to a 12.8 (80) to 6.16 (52) victory in front of 51,409 fans. Stringer booted three goals in the opening term. And although he failed to add to that tally after quartertime, West Coasts wobbles in front of goal ensured Essendon secured the win, despite the visitors ending the match with two fewer scoring shots. Essendon (6-7) have now won four of their past five matches, while West Coast (10-3) have lost two straight. The Eagles entered the match without their best two forwards after Josh Kennedy (leg) joined Jack Darling (ankle) on the sidelines. And it showed as the Eagles were directionless without their two key forwards. They couldnt find a target going forward, even though they had more inside 50s than their opponents (59-45). But it was in the midfield where the Eagles copped a first-half caning, especially in the opening term when Essen don booted six goals to nil. The Eagles entered the first break with a solitary behind to their name their lowest ever quarter-time score in Perth. And when Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti snapped a clever goal from the pocket early in the second term, the scoreboard read 50-1. Nic Naitanui scored West Coasts first goal at the 11-minute mark of the second quarter but the Eagles fluffed a series of other opportunities during the remainder of the half. Nevertheless, the Eagles had at least stopped the bleeding, with the home side entering the long break with some momentum. The lead was still a daunting 40 points at that stage and West Coast sprayed even more shots in the third quarter. Their plight was best summed up by ruckman Scott Lycett, who should have soccered through a goal from about 40cm out but missed it completely. Trailing by 37 points, West Coast rolled the dice in the final term by moving Jeremy McGovern forward. But the game was effectively put to bed early in the final quarter when Matt Guelfis long-range bomb took a lucky bounce and rolled through for a goal. West Coast lost the clearances (39-33) and contested possessions (143-126). JUSTIN CHADWICK Essendon captain Dyson Heppell gets a kick away despite succumbing to a West Coast tackle in Perth last night Picture: TONY McDONOUGH Blues hope Cripps will follow Curnow CARLTON has announced the re-signing of gun young forward Charlie Curnow, but the optimism around Patrick Cripps signing an extension soon appears premature. Curnow yesterday agreed to a four-year deal, which secures him until the end of the 2023 season. Its been reported its about $800,000 a year, which would almost certainly make him the highest-paid 21-year-old in the AFL premiership. Cripps, 23, is contracted until the end of the 2019 season and there have been discussions about extending him for a further two years. But it is believed Cripps is not yet ready to commit to the Blues beyond his existing contract. While the Blues are confident of keeping Cripps and would like to trump his contract extension as soon as possible, its understood Cripps would like to see how the trade and free agency period plays out at the Blues at the end of the season. Carlton list manager Stephen Silvagni indicated yesterday an announcement was forthcoming on Cripps. Were in a good spot, Silvagni said. Theyre very close (but) right at the minute, nothings been signed off, so until youve got a signature, you can probably say they havent agreed. Cripps management group plans to meet Silvagni in the next fortnight. Curnows signature will please Blues fans, who see Curnow and Cripps as the two players the club has set about building around. The Blues are also confident skipper Marc Murphy, who is a free agent at the end of the year, will re-commit to the Blues. Although he has kicked just 41 goals in 37 matches, Curnow is the beacon of hope for supporters. Im very thankful to the club for the opportunity to extend my contract for a further four years, Curnow said last night. It was never an option to go anywhere else, the club is basically an extension of my family and I wanted to repay the faith they have shown in me since I arrived at the end of 2015. I really believe in where our football program is heading.
